Digital ID protest: What do Richmond residents think?
By Dan Dury 30th Jan 2026
Hundreds gathered at Marble Arch last Saturday (24 January) for a protest against government digital ID proposals, marching through Oxford Street between midday and 5pm.
Organised by the People's Platform, demonstrators opposed what they described as digital surveillance and control systems.
Protesters expressed concerns about privacy, data security, and potential restrictions on everyday activities.
Richmond residents, at least on Nextdoor, appear united on the issue.
Jane Tait supports digital ID, citing European examples: "In Denmark and Holland, ID systems make life simpler and more secure. They reduce fraud and ensure everyone contributes to taxes."
Sir Alfred Shimminz of Kew questioned the protest's purpose, noting the Prime Minister's statement that digital ID won't be compulsory.
David M. from Twickenham Green also backs the proposal: "I couldn't collect my repaired watch from H Samuel without ID. A digital card on my phone would solve this."
The debate continues as government consultations progress. What are your thoughts on digital IDs? Let us know in the comments section.
