Change to recycling and waste collections as August Bank Holiday arrives

By The Editor 24th Aug 2020

Richmond residents have been reminded of changes to recycling and waste collection dates this August Bank Holiday.

The Bank Holiday is on Monday, August 31.

This week, Richmond Council will carry out its collections of general, food and garden waste and recycling at homes a day later than usual.

It means, for example, that Monday collections will take place on Tuesday, September 1.

The council said commercial waste and recycling collection services will run as usual.

Normal domestic collection schedules will resume a week later on Monday, September 7.

Collections etiquette

Residents should put their recycling or waste out by 6am on the morning of their collection day.

The council asked people not to leave it on the streets a whole day before to avoid bags being ripped and to keep roads clean and tidy.

Waste should be put out in securely tied sacks or in a bin with a lid which will help to prevent animal attacks and people adding litter.

It is a good idea to spray any loose bags with a chemical to deter animals – even a weak one like Febreeze works well.

Will the recycling centre be open?

For anyone who has a booking, the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Townmead Road will be open on the Bank Holiday Monday and operating Sunday hours – 9.00am to 4.00pm with last admission at 3.45pm.

The next day with availability is Monday, September 1.

Residents must book an appointment online before they visit.

Disposing of waste with covid

If residents are self-isolating or feel they have any symptoms of Covid-19, they should continue to put any potentially infected items (like used tissues or cleaning cloths) into separate plastic bags and double-bag them.

These bags should be stored for 72 hours before being put in with general waste for collection.
