Visitors to London's Royal Parks have been told to leave the wild deer alone after a fawn was handed into park authorities.

In Richmond and Bushy Park, visitors are advised to keep 50 metres away from the animals.

Royal Parks Police said visitors assumed the fawn was abandoned, picked it up and handed it into their officers.

The force said on Twitter: "Although very rare at this time of year, if you see a baby deer in the parks, please do not pick them up, even if you think it's abandoned. Their mothers will be close by. This deer was "handed" into us today #Stay50mAway."

Officers returned the fawn to where it was and said "hopefully its mother will find it".
