And a pub in Richmond has been crowned the winner in the Best Community Initiative category of the Hospitality Lockdown Hero Awards.

The Angel and Crown scooped the win after coordinating efforts to cook an incredible 5,000 meals for the poor throughout lockdown.

Its work in providing a safety net for the poor, homeless, vulnerable and those facing financial hardship earlier this year saw volunteers give 1,000 hours of their time, handing out 7,000 bottles of water and 285 items of clothing.

The pub in Church Court produced a video montage, which you can watch above, looking back on its efforts.

It won the award which honours a campaign that goes the extra mile in support of their community, beating six worthy finalists: Horse & Dove, Manorview Hotels & Leisure Group, OSO Arts Centre, Point A Hotels, Sommerins at Home, The Star Inn Harbottle.

A trophy now takes pride of place on the bar.

The pub said: "Just the most incredible achievement â¤ï¸ to everyone who voted for us, supported us through lockdown.

"To every patron that supported us as we took the pub in a new direction. This award is for you as well as every member of the Angels team. Thank you for everything ."

Sleep out for the homeless

The team at the Angel and Crown are not stopping there; they have set their sights on their next charitable endeavour.

They will be swapping their comfortable beds for a night outdoors as part of the homeless charity Glass Door's Sleep Out 2020.

"On 2 October 2020, we will be joining Glass Door Homeless 'Charity's Sleep Out' to bring shelter and support to men and women affected by homelessness," Liam Bignell from the pub wrote.

"During lockdown the Angel & Crown team fed those suffering from homelessness from the windows of the pub and we don't want to stop there! So on the 2nd of October Nick and his team will be sleeping outside the pub to raise money and awareness to support the most vulnerable of our community.

"While running winter night shelters in a shared space may not be possible, Glass Door is committed to finding ways to ensure that individuals in need can find safe shelter, a hot meal and a warm welcome.

"Please donate anything you can. Together, we can help to provide shelter and support to someone who has nowhere else to turn.

"Please share with family and friends on Facebook, Instagram and beyond - so we can reach our target, and together we can bring more people in off the streets."

They have set a fundraising target of £2,000 and you can donate here.
