The owners of House of Fraser's former town centre store say they are in a hurry to "realise the long-term future of this landmark building".

The large building at 75-81 George Street is now vacant following House of Fraser's closure in September and it has been returned to owners Canadian and Arcadia.

Earlier this year, Richmond Council's planning committee approved in principle an application for a redevelopment and multi-million-pound investment.

So what happens next?

Canadian and Arcadia has now set out what will happen to the former department store.

Vinyl window displays will be installed around the building to ensure the appearance is improved.

Internally, non-structural parts of the building will be stripped out, so surveys to take place.

The window displays will include signage to direct people to the businesses on side streets Paved Court and Golden Court, as part of C&A's commitment to supporting the town centre.

So what happens next?

A spokesperson for Canadian and Arcadia said: "Now that House of Fraser has vacated 80 George Street, we believe the long-term future of the building must be realised as quickly as possible.

"We were delighted that Richmond Council's Development Control Committee resolved to grant planning permission in March and despite the changing market, we remain committed to investing in 80 George Street and Richmond town centre.

"With the building now vacant, our contractors will shortly begin internal strip-out works so we can fully understand the condition of the property.

"We will ensure that residents, business owners and local groups in Richmond are kept updated as we move forward with the next stage of this landmark building's future."
