Police are on the scene after a tree trunk split in half and fell onto parked vehicles in Richmond Park.

Royal Parks Police told motorists to avoid the area.

"Please avoid Kingston Gate car park in #RichmondPark, officers and @theroyalparks are on scene dealing with a fallen tree," the team tweeted.

"Thankfully no one was hurt."

Their cars may not have got so lucky.

The force posted photos of the large tree which splintered through its trunk and landed on a number of vehicles.

It is a surprising accident to happen on a day with little wind.

We hope it has not caused too much damage.
