Scammers who were attempting to dupe motorists last September in Richmond have returned.

The fraudsters are using the same scam in which they target drivers as they go to pay for a ticket at a parking machine.

The areas previously targeted included the green and Old Deer Car Park in Richmond, and Ferry Lane and Station Approach in Kew.

Today (Wednesday, July 8) police said the scam has returned to Richmond town centre and is likely to spill over into Kew.

In a warning, the police said: "We are aware of a scam acrosss car parks in Kew and wider Richmond where victims are approached and offered help using parking machines.

"They are asked to insert debit cards and PIN before being told the machine must be broken.

"On occasion the debit cards have been retained by the machine and on others returned.

"On all occasions the debit cards have been used to either carry out fraudulent transactions or take cash out of ATMs."

The police advised drivers: "Do not accept any offer of assistance at the parking machine.

"If you genuinely experience issues, only use the assistance telephone number on the machine.

"Do not be pressured into inserting debit cards of PINs."

Kew officers said they are happy to provide a crime prevention visit to residents' homes.
