More details about the collision which saw a man taken to a major trauma centre with head injuries has emerged.

Yesterday (Thursday, October 22) a large number of emergency service crews from across Richmond borough descended upon Twickenham town centre.

At least four police vehicles, four ambulance crews, an undercover police car and an air ambulance helicopter attended.

The ambulance service said its paramedics treated a man for head injuries and took him to a trauma centre.

We now have information from the Met Police and the incident was far from a normal traffic collision.

It turns out the man was suspected of being in possession of two stolen e-scooters and he was injured after falling off one of these.

The police did not say whether he has been arrested but said the incident was under investigation.

"On Thursday October 22, a male was seen driving erratically along King Street, Twickenham, at approximately 12.30pm hours on an electric scooter," the police said in a statement.

"London Ambulance Service and HEMS (helicopter emergency medical service) arrived on scene with police arriving soon after due to the initial fall.

"His injuries were deemed not-life threatening or changing and was taken to a South London hospital as HEMS was recalled.

"The scooters were suspected stolen and the matter is being further investigated by local officers."

Law on e-scooters

Electric scooters became legal to ride on UK roads in July - but only rental ones, and there are no rental schemes currently operating.

Rental trials in the West Midlands; Portsmouth and Southampton; Derby and Nottingham; and south west cities including Bath and Bristol are being planned.
