MP Munira Wilson has spoken of her shock and anger over the failure to prosecute a teen girl gang over an appalling attack on a defenceless 12-year-old girl.

The vicious attack, which left the youngster injured and traumatised, was filmed and posted on Instagram.

Nub News revealed at the weekend that the police and prosecuting authorities would not be taking action against the gang despite the fact the attack involved a weapon and it was captured on video.

The girl's mother told Nub News that the family felt let down, angry and sad that no action has been taken. The original story can be read here.

Now, Munira Wilson, the MP for Twickenham, who supported the family at the time of the attack, has joined the condemnation of the failure to take action.

She said: "As a mother, I cannot begin to imagine both the trauma and fear this family have suffered, and I share their anger that the attackers will not be prosecuted.

"I was shocked and appalled to learn of this awful incident earlier this year and raised my concerns with local police leaders at the time. I pressed for more patrols and a swifter, more robust, response to these sorts of incidents."

Earlier this year, the MP together with the Richmond Park MP, Sarah Olney, and the Richmond Council leader, Gareth Roberts, wrote to the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, calling on him to increase officer numbers in the borough.

They argued it is vital to provide 'effective reassurance' to residents across the Richmond, Kew, Twickenham and Teddington area following a series of incidents, including a number of attacks on youngsters.

The attack on the 12-year-old took place in the small Holly Road playground and park in the centre of Twickenham, which is just a few hundred yards from the police station. The same park has been at the centre of a series of attacks and anti-social behaviour, which has driven many families with young children away from what should be a safe place to play.

The MP said: "Parks should be a safe place for children and, at a time where young people have been locked inside for so long, it is heart-breaking to hear that a young girl is now scared to leave her home.

"As a country, and as a local community, we must do more to make sure that young girls feel safe in our local area. I too feel disappointed and sad. My heart goes out to the victim, her mother and the rest of the family.

"More needs to be done to make sure that young people feel safe in our local communities and that those who commit such heinous crimes face the consequences."

The attack on the 12-year-old was among a number of assaults in the area which were reported to the police through March and April.

In one incident, a girl of 13 was threatened with assault and chased to her home. She was subsequently threatened on two occasions by girls, armed with a broom handle and bat, who camped on her doorstep.

In Redlees Park, Isleworth, a 13-year-old girl was attacked by gang of 15-20 teenagers.

On another occasion in the Holly Road playground, a mother of a two-year-old dragged away two female attackers, who were being filmed on smartphones as they carried out a frenzied attack on a teenage girl.

A gang of teen girls and boys was involved in antisocial behaviour at the play area on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. Fearful parents reported the incident to 999 and Twickenham Police Station.

A police spokesman released the following statement about the attack on the 12-year-old: "On Monday 12th April 2021, at 15:00 hours, a 12 year old girl was physically assaulted by a group of teenagers at Holly Road Garden of Rest in Twickenham.

"This incident was reported to police at 16.50 hours on the 12th April and an investigation began.

"The assault resulted in injuries amounting to Actual Bodily Harm (ABH). The victim did not require medical treatment at the time of reporting.

"Three teenage girls were arrested, interviewed and bailed for the offence of Actual Bodily Harm. The investigation has since been closed with no further action being taken against the three teenagers. The victim has been informed."
