MP to ask about stronger penalties for dog attacks on animals
Richmond Park MP Sarah Olney has responded to a petition addressed to her in the wake of the death of a popular seal pup.
More than 2,300 people have signed the petition by Ellie Bright titled In memory of Freddie – stop dog attacks on wildlife.
Freddie Mercury was a habour seal who suffered fatal injuries after being attacked by a dog near Hammersmith Bridge eight days ago.
The dog's owner Rebecca Sabben-Clare said she was told by the RSCPA that "no offence had been committed".
Ms Olney told Richmond Nub News she will contact the government about whether it plans to bring in new laws to punish attacks on animals.
"Like many people I was shocked and horrified by the tragic death of Freddie the Seal," she said.
