'Chichi Richmond' - what Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide said

By The Editor 28th Mar 2021

Richmond gets a mention in today's Sunday Times Best Places to Live - but it is not the most complimentary.

Our town is described as being overly flashy and without true style - "chichi", as the guide puts in.

It references Richmond as one of the "many areas of the capital [where] the retail offerings have shut up shop".

But in Teddington - which it named as the best place to live in London - "the lights are on and the queues are friendly".

What the guide says of Teddington

[i]Athleisure-wear was the uniform of the pandemic, and nowhere more so than in TW11.

From sunrise to sunset the wide leafy streets, River Thames towpaths and glorious 1,000-acre expanse of Bushy Park pounded to the sound of joggers, walkers and hi-vis cyclists - many accompanied by a dog or two.

Teddington nails the sweet spot between practical and aspirational. While in many areas of the capital the retail offerings have shut up shop — just look at chichi Richmond downstream — in Teddington the lights are on and the queues are friendly.

There is everything you need, with three chain supermarkets including a Marks & Spencer, artisanal cafes, bistros, bars and the Good Wine Shop.

Teddington also has boutiques, beauty salons, chemists, a Waterstones and Teddington Essentials, where we dare you not to find what you need (and if it's not there it will be in Teddington Hardware), while Lensbury Resort offers a luxury spa and a gym.

There are services to Clapham Junction and Waterloo (from 35 minutes). The M3 and M25 aren't far away and Heathrow Airport is about a 20-minute drive.

You'll love living here if you're looking for a community that nurtures and the best nature in London.
