He was formerly in charge of the nation's finances but Sajid Javid proved last weekend that he can drum up support for charitable causes too.

The former Chancellor of the Exchequer laced up his running shoes for the Kew Gardens 10k on Sunday, September 13.

Mr Javid is MP for Bromsgrove and has raised a fantastic £13,420 (and counting) for his local Primrose Hospice.

He tweeted: "Great start to day after running @kewgardens 10K for @PrimroseHospice.

"Still time to donate to a great cause.

Thank you @RichmondRunFest for organising."

Mr Javid completed the 10 kilometres in a time of 53 minutes and 44 seconds.

The race was won by Seyfu Jamaal who clocked just 30 minutes and 14 seconds, breaking a record that had stood for 16 years.

British international Tracey Barlow claimed the 'Queen of Richmond' title as the fastest woman over the weekend with a time of 34 minutes and 54 seconds.

The Kew Gardens 10k was the UK's largest social distancing running event since the outbreak of Covid-19.

Race director Tom Bedford said he hopes it can set an example that more running events including parkrun can soon follow.
