About the Role
We are seeking a dependable, proactive, and hardworking School Caretaker to join our team. The caretaker plays a vital role in ensuring the school site is safe, secure, and well-maintained, providing a welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Site Security & Access

Open and lock the school each day, ensuring all buildings and grounds are secure.

Act as a keyholder, responding to alarm calls and emergencies when required.

Monitor access to the site and ensure visitor protocols are followed.
Maintenance & Repairs
-
Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs (plumbing, joinery, decorating, electrics).

Identify and report any site issues requiring specialist attention.

Support larger refurbishment projects and supervise external contractors.
Health, Safety & Compliance
-
Conduct regular safety checks, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, and playground equipment.

Ensure compliance with health and safety, safeguarding, and statutory regulations.

Maintain accurate records of checks, inspections, and maintenance work.
Facilities & Grounds

Ensure classrooms, corridors, and external areas are safe, clean, and well presented.

Maintain grounds including litter collection, gritting pathways, and seasonal tasks.

Manage waste disposal and recycling across the site.
Support for the School Community

Set up rooms, halls, and equipment for lessons, assemblies, and school events.

Liaise with staff and support their needs for premises-related matters.

Promote a positive and professional image of the school at all times.
Person Specification
Essential:
-
Previous experience in caretaking, site management, or a facilities/maintenance role.

Strong practical skills and the ability to carry out basic repairs.

Awareness of health and safety legislation and safe working practices.

Reliable, organised, and able to prioritise workload.

Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with staff, pupils, and contractors.
Desirable:

Experience working in a school or educational environment.

Relevant training certificates (e.g. Health & Safety, First Aid, Asbestos Awareness, COSHH).

Full UK driving licence.
