Ri Rua is a band Hammersmith-based playing traditional Irish folk songs and instrumental pieces. The name is taken from the Irish word for "chaffinch", reflecting the diasporic and international nature of the band members and the tradition itself. Like the chaffinch, we have each migrated and returned to Irish culture, music and tradition after journeying through other traditions and musical genres. The best journeys lead home.
This concert will explore some of the origins of Irish folk songs and instrumental pieces, using photography, maps and personal connections with the musicians themselves. Ri Rua will take you on a journey from the toe-tapping drinking songs of Kilburn to the mournful slow airs of Donegal.
