Richmond: Runner completes 100th marathon at Thames Meander Marathon!

By The Editor 9th Aug 2021

Last week we told the story of marathon runner Michael Wiggins who was about to complete his 100th marathon in a scenic race along the banks of the Thames.

We are pleased to report that Michael came 11th out of 181 finishers at the Thames Meander Marathon and completed the race in an astonishing 3 hours and 10 minutes, despite the torrential downpours that made most of us stay indoors all weekend.

This was the eighth Thames Meander Marathon, which begins at the YMCA Hawker Centre HQ in Kingston and meanders along the Thames Path to the Barn Elms Rowing Club and back again. Michael has completed the course 6 times.

Saturday's race was a culmination of 22 years of running for Michael, who has also completed 12 ultra marathons and runs with Clapham Pioneers.

He said: "It was such a brilliant morning even in the two hours plus of horrible rain!

"It definitely didn't dampen the mood and the sunshine even came out for the final mile and photos afterwards.

"I was lucky enough to have 13 other Clapham Pioneers including my Dad running the half marathons so plenty of support at the finish line.

"The afternoon was spent in a local pub with friends and family and a brilliant cake made by my Mum."

Michael still turned up to training with Clapham Pioneers on Sunday and is now looking ahead to his next race.

He said: "Yesterday's running club group run (11 miles) was a bit of a struggle but I'm now looking forward to a couple of days rest before getting ready for the next marathon, which is Brighton in five weeks' time."

Congratulations, Michael and all runners who took part on Saturday!
