A football club bought by a real-life Ted Lasso for just £15 has won its first tournament.

East Sheen FC, in Richmond upon Thames, London, was founded 152 years ago, but became defunct in the early 1900s.

But 23-year-old student Matthew Evans, from South Carolina, USA, revived the club by buying the rights to register the club for just £15.

He's been called a real-life Ted Lasso, as the fictional American TV character also took over a club in Richmond upon Thames.

The club travelled up to Tynemouth Longsands, in Tyne and Wear, between Friday, July 3, and Sunday, July 5, to compete in the England Beach Soccer Championships.

There, they won against Donis Essex Boys 4-2 to take the title and become the England Beach Soccer Men's champions.

It also qualifies them for the FORZA Men's Super Cup, the top competition in English beach soccer.

Club chairman and University of Roehampton graduate Matthew said: "This weekend represents everything we're trying to build at East Sheen FC.

"When the opportunity came up, we wanted to make sure the players could experience it without worrying about the financial side, so the club made the decision to fully cover the trip.

"A group of university students travelled from London to Newcastle, played a format of football many of them had never experienced before, and came back as champions.

"That's something they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

"East Sheen has been around since 1873, and our responsibility is to protect that history while creating new opportunities for the next generation.

"Football is about experiences, friendships and moments like this.

"The players deserve all the credit. They represented themselves and the club brilliantly all weekend.

"A massive thank you goes to Luke Kerr and everyone at England Beach Soccer. The organisation, atmosphere and experience they created was fantastic, and we're excited to continue supporting the growth of beach soccer in England."

The club, which was founded in 1873, lost its enclosed home pitch in 1906, and its competitive activity came to an end.

After a couple of relaunches, it failed to survive after World War II and had been dormant ever since.

It was relaunched earlier this year, 120 years after the club went defunct.
