Zebra crossing for Richmond Bridge with new move to put people before cars

By Rory Poulter 25th Sep 2021

Plans to bring more greenery to the streets, widen footpaths and, significantly, add a zebra crossing on the approach to Richmond Bridge, have been unveiled.

Richmond Borough Council has launched a consultation on the scheme, which is designed to bring new life and visitors to streets hit by the pandemic.

The most eye-opening proposal is for a new zebra crossing on the Richmond side of the bridge between the Pitcher & Piano restaurant and the entrance to the path leading down to the towpath, close to the Bill's restaurant

Currently, people trying to cross the road at this location have to play a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the traffic.

The addition of a zebra crossing should improve safety for pedestrians, however it may also have the effect of slowing vehicles on what is a key route through Richmond, so adding to jams.

The Council said the proposals are the result of its 'effort to assist local businesses and residents returning to using town centres after the COVID-19 pandemic's lockdowns.'

They were drawn up on the basis of recommendations from a working group comprised of local stakeholders, ward members, Council officers and consultants to decide on how to improve Richmond Town Centre.

A spokesman said: "These improvements are centred around making Richmond Town Centre safer, easier and more enjoyable for residents, visitors and businesses."

Other elements of the scheme include the upgrading the footways and parking bays, as well as installing planters, between the junction of Hill Rise and Petersham Road up to the Vineyard Road.

A new so-called 'parklet' will be created on the largely neglected green triangle area at the junction of Hill Rise and Petersham Road.

There is also a plan to install a raised crossing point on Parkshot Road outside Merevale House, a residential home, in the centre of Richmond.

Cllr Alexander Ehmann, chair of the Transport and Air Quality Committee for Richmond Council, said: "We want people to feel safe when walking around Richmond Town Centre and to enjoy spending time there.

"We hope that residents, visitors and businesses benefit from safer crossing points and the upgraded stretch of footways and parking bays, as well as the new parklet. Please share your feedback."

Richmond Council is inviting residents to share their feedback on the proposed measures by visiting the consultation page where you can have your say and view the full details and drawings. The consultation closes on October 10.
