Warnings resurface over door-to-door conman

By The Editor 14th Dec 2022

Warnings have resurfaced over a serial door-to-door conman.

Darren Bingham, who has a string of convictions and anti social behaviour orders against his name, has been targeting residents in Teddington and Twickenham.

Bingham, of Feltham, has a long history of doorstep cons across the borough.

The scams can include claiming he needs cash to get home or visit a sick relative in hospital, and requesting payments to remove rubbish and then disappearing.

Bingham was jailed by Isleworth Crown Court in 2020 after he was found to be going door-to-door during lockdown in pursuit of money.

One victim was 'intimidated' into handing over £20 to Bingham, but others recognised him from reports of his past offending and called the police.

The court heard he had a 'terrible record of similar offending', with 58 previous convictions, and was already banned from begging in England and Wales under a criminal behaviour order.

He was jailed in January 2020 for breaking a criminal behaviour order by asking for money while claiming his father was ill or his wife had just gone into labour. Just two weeks after his release from prison, Bingham started offending again and was then jailed in May.

Residents have issued a warning on Nextdoor, saying Bingham has been active in Teddington and across the borough in recent weeks.

They said: "Darren Bingham who is known for making up personal emergencies to 'scam' residents out of money, has returned to our area.

"He has a string of convictions against his name and has previously been jailed for unsolicited begging. Our police force last week took to social media to warn us about the 'persistent beggar' and urge anyone with information to make contact with police. He is known to target residents in Hounslow, Isleworth, and Twickenham along side Teddington.

"Darren now looks a little more Grey in his appearance 'Head & beard', just be vigilant."
