A walker in Richmond Park was sent to the hospital after being hit on the head by a golf ball from a nearby club, they claim.

An Italian couple, who asked to remain anonymous, were towards Petersham through Richmond Park at around 11:45am on 26 August when the boyfriend was "suddenly and forcefully struck on the forehead by a white golf ball."

They claim the ball came from Richmond Golf Club.

Speaking to Richmond Nub News, the girlfriend explained: "The ball came from Richmond Golf Club, traveling at an alarming speed and outside the boundaries of the golf course.

"The impact caused him to fall to the ground, resulting in significant head trauma and bleeding."

Emergency services were called to the scene and the boyfriend was taken to Kingston Hospital where he underwent a neurosurgical assessment to examine his injuries.

"He is miraculously alive and he is feeling better today, but if the golf ball would have hit him a few centimetres away in the temple or in the eye for example, it would have been much worse," the girlfriend says.

The hospital doctor confirmed that the man did not suffer internal bleeding, but that they had to clean and glue the wound.

Distressed by the accident, the couple want to ensure an investigated is conducted into Richmond Park Golf to ensure it does not happen again.

The girlfriend added: "We believe it is important for an investigation to be conducted to determine how this incident occurred, and hold those from The Richmond Golf Club responsible accountable.

"Moreover, action needs to be taken to prevent such a serious event from happening again."

Nub News has reached out to Richmond Park Golf club who confirm it is working with the affected couple to investigate the cause of the accident.

General Manager of Richmond Park Golf Club, John R Maguire, said: "I have been in daily communication with those directly involved to ensure their well-being, which is the most important factor here.

"We are not aware of an incident like this ever happening before, certainly not in my 18 years here at the Club, and are investigating thoroughly.

"This includes liaising with the Park Authorities and on the day the Police who attended the scene of the accident."

At the time of writing, the girlfriend says her partner is recovering and has another doctor's appointment scheduled for a further check-up.
