Kingston Council has raised concerns about Thames Water's Teddington Direct River Abstraction (TDRA), which it says could see higher concentrations of pollutants discharged into the river Thames at Teddington.

In a document published on its website, the authority said: "While acknowledging the vital importance of securing long-term water supplies for London during drought conditions, the council has raised significant questions and concerns regarding Thames Water's updated proposal, and the impact on Kingston's communities, green spaces and road networks.

In particular, the council has posed questions relating to the following:

• The impact of extended construction timelines
• The impact on open space
• The impact on community events and recreational activities
• The impact on the public highway and traffic
• Environmental, ecological and health impacts
• The impact on the river and Designated Bathing Area
• Thames Water's consultation process

"The council will continue to scrutinise the proposals, press Thames Water for clear answers and ensure Kingston's communities are properly represented throughout the planning process."

However, a Thames Water spokesperson said: "The project will meet strict water quality standards set by the Environment Agency (EA) and an environmental permit would be required to operate the project.

"Thames Water will not be able to obtain a permit unless the conditions set by the EA are met."
