Trains running between Twickenham and St Margarets were halted for a time on Thursday afternoon following an assault.
A man is understood to have attacked two police officers before escaping onto the tracks.
British Transport Police (BTP) said: "Officers at St Margarets stopped a man at 4.48pm yesterday (21 July). He became violent and assaulted two officers before running away.
"A thorough search of the area was conducted, however the man wasn't located. Enquiries are ongoing.
"Thankfully neither officer sustained serious injuries. Both attended a local hospital for assessment and were discharged yesterday evening."
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 4.51pm today (21 July) to reports of an assault at St Margarets Rail Station, Twickenham.
"We sent two incident response officers and members of our hazardous area response team (HART) to the scene."
South Western Railway said: "After reports of a trespasser on the line between St Margaret's and Twickenham, the line was closed to allow BTP to safely conduct a thorough search of the area. The line was reopened at 5.30pm but the disruption to services continued until 9pm."
"We'd like to apologise to customers for the disruption to their journeys yesterday evening and the inconvenience caused."
