Richmond's Orange Tree Theatre has launched a public fundraising campaign to raise the final £350,000 needed to complete its £4.5 million redevelopment project, OT: Open to Everyone.

The theatre has already secured £4.1 million towards the total cost, with building work due to begin in March.

The project aims to transform the venue's front-of-house and backstage areas to make the theatre more accessible, welcoming and environmentally sustainable, while preserving the much-loved intimacy of its in-the-round auditorium.

Designed by architects Allies and Morrison, the redevelopment will leave the auditorium unchanged, ensuring the distinctive atmosphere that has defined the Orange Tree for decades remains at the heart of the venue.

Artistic Director Tom Littler said: "2026 is a big year for the Orange Tree as we raise the final funds needed for our capital project, OT: Open to Everyone, and get to work on transforming our front of house areas and the OT's accessibility.

"We are so grateful to the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames' Community Fund for supporting our campaign, alongside the huge generosity of our audiences and supporters."

The campaign has also been boosted by a £75,000 grant from Richmond Council's Community Fund.

Executive Director Julie Weston added: "Our current fundraising stands at 92 per cent of our £4.5 million goal, and with building work set to commence in March, we are so close to realising our vision of being a truly accessible theatre."

Richmond Council's Councillor John Coombs said the redevelopment would benefit the wider community as well as theatre-goers.

"This project is about more than just bricks and mortar. It's about strengthening the fabric of our community," he said.

"With a more accessible and flexible building, the theatre will be able to do even more for local schools and organisations."

The public campaign launch is supported by a video featuring actor Niamh Cusack, who will soon star in a revival of Vincent in Brixton at the theatre.

She described the Orange Tree as a space where "the audience is part of the story", adding: "They're a small space, but think big… with your support, they'll keep making unforgettable theatre for everyone."

Actor Oliver Ford Davies, a founding company member and recent star of the theatre's Twelfth Night, also backed the appeal, saying the redevelopment would protect the venue's unique intimacy while ensuring it is accessible to all.
