South west London Humanists grapple with big questions
Local Humanists in Richmond, Twickenham and South West London have been grappling with big questions.
They met in Richmond in September to grapple with the problem "How can countries do enough to tackle climate change if it makes today's citizens poorer?."
Richard Martin, Vice Chair of SW London Humanists, explains "We know from a recent survey of our 400 members that want both to meet socially with like-minded non-religious people and to develop their own knowledge and thinking.
"They also want to make a contribution to the local community and support Humanists UK's campaigns.
"As well as speaker meetings and discussions, the group has regular walks, a book group, and a concert group."
There are local humanist celebrants officiating at funerals, weddings and baby-namings, pastoral support volunteers in hospitals and prisons, school speakers, and humanists working alongside people from local faith communities in faith and belief forums, and on the local authority committees which serve the RE syllabus for their schools.
Humanists have been at the forefront of social change both locally and globally.
Humanism champions a tolerant world where rational thinking & kindness prevail, with members sharing the belief that living in the here & now is important because there is no afterlife.
South West London Humanists comprises around 400 non religious people who put their beliefs into practice via a wide range of activities.
Monthly meetings are held in Richmond, and sometimes other locations including Kingston & Putney, where discussions about current topics of interest are held, often featuring a guest speaker, including from religious and campaigning groups.
The groups also supports Humanists UK campaigns on a range of local & national issues
