Richmond speed dating night launched by founder frustrated with dating apps and singles events
By Nub News Reporter 14th May 2026
A dating events company launched after its founder became frustrated with "poorly organised" singles nights and dating apps is bringing its latest event to Richmond.
Sam, founder of S1ngle, said he started the business in October 2025 after struggling to find events aimed at people looking for "sincere and lasting love".
Following a successful first event in Guildford, the organiser is now hosting a speed dating evening for people aged 26 to 44 at Slug & Lettuce Richmond.
Sam said the idea came from seeing a "gap in the market" for better organised dating experiences focused on genuine connections rather than apps.
He said: "The feedback at the first event in Guildford was positive and I was motivated to continue when I saw matches being made.
"You only need a few chirpy and joyful folks who uplift the mood of the entire room."
As part of the format, the evenings include group discussions after speed dating sessions, with topics such as "What do men want?" and "What do women want?" designed to encourage more open conversation.
Sam explained that the events also help more introverted attendees by offering matchmaking support after the evening finishes, rather than expecting people to exchange numbers on the spot.
He added: "The shy and introvert folks often hesitate to ask for the phone number directly, and this is why I do the matchmaking after the event. It improves the chances of finding a date."
According to the organiser, more than 95 per cent of attendees come to singles events alone, though many leave having formed new friendships as well as romantic connections.
Alongside the Richmond speed dating night, S1ngle is also planning a combined "speed friending" and speed dating picnic in Richmond Park on Saturday, 20 June.
Sam said one of the biggest challenges has been finding suitable venues with a relaxed atmosphere.
"My current challenge is finding a nice venue, in a central location and one without loud music. Quiet environment is crucial to having meaningful conversations," he said.
