Two Richmond borough schools will take centre stage in Trafalgar Square next month as they compete in the Jr. NBA 3v3 Finals, one of London's growing youth basketball competitions.
Students from Turing House School and Waldegrave School, both representing Richmond upon Thames, have secured their places in the finals after progressing through qualifying rounds against schools from across the capital.
The finals will take place on Thursday, 9 July with Trafalgar Square once again transformed into a major basketball arena as young players battle it out in front of one of London's most iconic landmarks.
Now in its second year, the Jr. NBA 3v3 programme is delivered by London Marathon Events in collaboration with the NBA, with organisers aiming to give more children opportunities to take part in basketball while growing the sport across the capital.
This year's event has expanded further, with organisers introducing a primary school competition alongside the secondary school tournament, allowing even more young players to get involved.
Ten secondary schools from boroughs across London have qualified for the finals, with Richmond particularly well represented through the inclusion of both Turing House and Waldegrave.
Waldegrave School said: "We are incredibly proud of how well they [its girls team] have done already and are certainly winners in our eyes.
"The final in July will be an amazing experience no matter the outcome and we can't wait to cheer them on the big stage."
Schools competing on the day include teams from Brent, Havering, Lambeth, Newham, Westminster and Barking, alongside Richmond's local representatives.
As well as live matches, the event will feature music, fan activities and entertainment throughout the day, creating a festival atmosphere in the heart of the capital.
The finals are being billed as a major celebration of youth sport in London while highlighting the continued rise in popularity of basketball among young people.
Organisers say the event offers young athletes a rare opportunity to represent their borough on a major public stage while showcasing the future talent emerging across the city.
