'Now then, where were we?' Richmond pubs and bars' reopening plans

By The Editor

2nd Jul 2020 | Local News

The big day is nearly upon us - the long-awaited reopening of pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Dubbed 'Super Saturday', it will also see the 2 metre social distancing rule dropped in favour of remaining "1m plus" away.

This paves the way for members of two different households to be allowed to drink and dine together from this Saturday, July 4.

Many bars and pubs in Richmond have announced their reopening plans.

But not all plan on doing so right away. The White Cross, Shaftsbury and the Old Ship have said they will reopen in more than two weeks, on Monday, July 20.

The Roebuck on Richmond Hill will open on Monday, July 6, as well as all other Green King pubs.

And the stylish So Bar, in Brewers Lane, is opening on Thursday, July 9.

If you run a Richmond business that will be relaunching soon, email [email protected] with some details and we'll include you in this list.

These are a selection of Richmond's boozers that are opening again at the earliest opportunity - this Saturday.

The Britannia

An intimate pub and restaurant which claims to be the "oldest and prettiest pub in central Richmond".

It boasts a sunny garden, terrace and upstairs dining room and is one of OpenTable's top 10 London gastropubs.

Only two hours ago, it announced its intention to open with the message: "Now then.....Where were we? #supersaturday #socialdistancing #pubsopenagain."

The Cricketers

A pub overlooking the Green, where in more normal times patrons could enjoy a fine view of the cricket being played.

The Cricketers has adjusted to the times, however. It sells draught beer and cider in pints with lids that you can take away and enjoy in the park or at home.

Pitcher and Piano

"We've missed you but we are excited to announce that we are now taking reservations for tables from Saturday 4th July," they told their Facebook followers.

"We've been working hard behind the scenes ensuring that we can open our doors again in the safest way possible - keeping our guests and teams safe is our number one priority!!

"For now we will be taking food and drinks reservations for a maximum of 6 people for 2 hours per table.

"We'd really recommend making a reservation to avoid disappointment."

Visit their website for more information and bookings.

Richmond Athletics Association

Rugby folk only, I'm afraid.

The athletics association is the home of Richmond Rugby and London Scottish RFC.

They wrote on Facebook: "Following the government's decision to allow pubs to re-open, we are delighted to announce that we will be opening the Members Bar at the Richmond Athletic Ground on Saturday 4th July from 3pm.

"All customers will be required to provide their name and mobile number prior to entering the bar, we will be strictly following all the government guidelines, including social distancing, so please help us in facilitating this.

"Security will be in place and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated."

Rising Sun

This atmospheric pub is on the corner of Richmond Road, near St Stephen's Church and Marble Hill Park.

It gets particularly busy on rugby days, on its music and pub quiz nights and among punters who hungry for one of its wood-fired pizzas.

A message on its website reads "We're back on the 4th!".

Customers are encouraged to book a table by calling 0208 8926 252 or emailing [email protected]

The Victoria Inn

Branding itself the town's "smallest and friendliest", the Victoria Inn reopened for takeaway food and drinks in late May.

And it's proving a rip-roaring success.

The pub's excellent spot on Richmond Hill has meant it's had a steady stream of customers who fancy a pint in the sun on the grassy bank opposite.

It serves alcoholic and soft drinks and sandwiches, seven days a week, from 1pm to 7pm.

In a message to its patrons, they posted: "We just wanted to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all our customers, old and new, who have supported us over the last few weeks.

"We appreciate it more than you realise. It wouldn't have been possible without all of you. Thank you again to you all."
