A Freedom of Information Request to the British Transport Police made by Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park, Sarah Olney, has found that 909 sexual offences were committed on the London Underground in the 12 months between December 2022 and November 2023.

The figures also showed that 3,542 violent incidents and 738 robberies occurred on the Tube over the same period.

Alarmingly, the last 12 months saw a significant increase across all three crimes compared to the previous year, where 866 sexual offences, 2,963 violent incidents and 442 robberies were reported respectively.

The Liberal Democrats have accused the Mayor of London and the Conservative Government of political bickering rather than working together to tackle crime on public transport.

The party is calling for a return to local community policing across the country, in an effort to reduce crime.

Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park, Sarah Olney said: "Women deserve to feel safe on public transport, yet these alarming figures risk telling a different story.

"This Conservative Government and the Mayor of London need to end their political bickering, get around the table, and define a strategy to tackle this surge in crime on public transport.

"Londoners deserve better - which is why the Liberal Democrats are calling for a return to local community policing which will help keep Londoners safe."

Rob Blackie, Liberal Democrat Candidate for Mayor of London said: "Clear up rates for sexual offences have halved during Sadiq Khan's time in charge.

"And with almost half of these crimes committed by repeat offenders, there's a danger things will keep getting worse.

"The Metropolitan Police is in crisis, with too many police stuck in the back office or buried under paperwork.

"We need the Met focused on tackling violent crime and sexual assault, instead of wasting time on pointless activities"
