Richmond's leading leisure centres are set for a transformation, with major upgrades and improved services aimed at making it easier for residents to stay fit, healthy and active.

Under a new 10-year contract approved by Richmond Council, Pools on the Park in Richmond and Teddington Pools and Fitness Centre will see a wide range of improvements, including facility upgrades, expanded programmes, and enhanced accessibility.

The changes will be delivered by Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), trading under the 'Better' brand, from 1 October 2025.

Other sites including Hampton, Shene, Teddington Sports Centre, Whitton, and the new Active Hampton Centre will continue to be managed directly by the Council.

Councillor Alan Juriansz, Vice Chair of the Environment, Sustainability, Culture and Sports Committee, welcomed the partnership, saying: "This is a big moment for our local leisure services - and represents a significant investment in the health and wellbeing of our community.

"GLL bring expertise and a strong track record of delivering modern, inclusive leisure services.

"They'll help us strengthen what's already valued while raising the bar for quality and access.

"We'll continue to oversee operations to ensure the service meets the needs of our diverse community."

As part of the new agreement, GLL has committed to:

  • Upgrading gym and swimming facilities
  • Improving accessibility and inclusivity across all services
  • Expanding the range of fitness and swim programmes available

Peter Bundey, CEO of GLL, said the organisation was proud to become a long-term partner of the borough.

"We are delighted to be a long-term partner with the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames to deliver leisure services within the leisure centres and importantly out in the Richmond community.

"As a charitable social enterprise that focuses on social impact and community wellbeing, our values are aligned with the Council's ambitious Richmond Moves for a Healthier Borough Strategy.

"Our investment plans and management experience will be an important factor in helping us to grow the reach and impact of the leisure facilities and wellbeing services across Richmond residents.

"We are committed to engage and encourage new and existing users to live more active and healthier lifestyles," he said.

The upgrades form part of Richmond Council's wider Leisure Strategy – Richmond Moves for a Healthier Borough (2024–29), which aims to get more people leading active lives and enjoying shared community spaces.
