A cheese shop in Richmond will remain open throughout the new lockdown - because the food is essential.

Teddington Cheese can be found on Hill Rise at the bottom of Richmond Hill.

The experienced cheesemongers have been in the town for years and are a staple of the Richmond shopping scene.

"We are pleased to confirm that cheese is considered 'essential', so both shops will remain open during lockdown2," the company tweeted.

"To keep our customers and staff safe, only one customer is allowed in the shop at a time."

The news was greeted with delight by its followers. Stella Alexander said: "I've always considered cheese to be essential."

Joanna replied with a gif of a baby celebrating enthusiastically with clenched fists.

Teddington Cheese has set out more information about how it will operate Caerphilly over the next few weeks on its website.

  1. Both shops remain open as usual, but we are requesting that no more than one customer is in the shop at any one time and that you remain the required distance from our staff. We will only be able take cards and not cash
  2. For customers who are unable to come to the shop in person, we are offering FREE local delivery within a two mile radius of the shops. Simply order online, select the collect in store option, so no delivery charges are added, and then put 'local delivery' in the instruction box.
  3. Unfortunately, we have had to cancel all cheese masterclasses until further notice. We will be contacting people directly who have bookings over the next 6 weeks.

"We'd like to thank all our customers for their continued support," they said.
