Young people across Richmond borough will be inspired to follow in the footsteps of Richmond-based Sir David Attenborough as the Council yesterday (Tuesday, 7 July) unveiled a brand new schools programme celebrating his 100th birthday.

Launched at East Sheen Primary School, Attenborough at 100 will provide grants of £1,000 to up to 10 primary schools to create projects that help children explore nature, boost biodiversity and protect the environment.

Speaking at the launch, Councillor Julia Cambridge, chair of the education and children's services committee, said: "Few people have done more to inspire generations to care about our planet than Sir David Attenborough.

"We're incredibly proud that Richmond has been his home for more than seven decades.

"This programme is about honouring that legacy in the best possible way – by giving young people the opportunity to discover, protect and champion the natural world in their own communities.

"I can't wait to see the creativity, passion and ambition our schools bring to these projects."

Schools are being invited to develop projects that help children learn about wildlife, biodiversity and climate action, with successful projects to be completed before Sir David's 101st birthday in May 2027.

Cllr Julia Neden-Watts, chair of the environment, sustainability, culture and sports committee, added: "Helping children build a lifelong connection with nature is one of the most important investments we can make.

"These projects will inspire young people to explore their local environment, understand the challenges facing wildlife and become the environmental champions of the future."

Harry Page, Headteacher at East Sheen Primary School, commented: "Helping children develop a love of nature and a sense of responsibility for the world around them is an important part of life at East Sheen Primary School.

"We are delighted to support this initiative in honour of Sir David Attenborough, whose work has inspired so many people to care about our planet.

"The programme will give our pupils valuable opportunities to learn, explore and make a positive difference, and we are excited to see the impact it will have across schools in Richmond."

During Tuesday's launch, pupils from East Sheen Primary School's eco group joined Richmond's Mayor Cllr Nancy Baldwin, Cllr Julia Cambridge, and school staff to celebrate the programme and discuss how young people can play a leading role in protecting nature.

Primary schools across Richmond upon Thames can apply for grants of up to £1,000 by submitting proposals for projects that help children learn about the natural environment, biodiversity or conservation.

Applications close on 26 September 2026, with successful schools announced later in the autumn. Schools can find out more about the programme and apply online here.
