Richmond upon Thames has been ranked among the areas with the highest burglary rates in England, according to new data.

A study by Alan Boswell Group analysed the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, looking at residential burglaries across 310 local authorities in England and Wales.

The research found that Richmond upon Thames recorded 8.63 burglaries per 1,000 households in the year ending September 2025, placing it 37th in England.

In total, there were 696 home burglaries recorded across the borough during that period.

Neighbouring areas also featured in the top 50, including Hounslow (26th with 9.24 per 1,000 households) and Ealing (34th with 8.91).

Across the country, Middlesbrough topped the list, with 14.87 burglaries per 1,000 households, despite seeing an 11.5% drop compared to the previous year.

Westminster and Bradford were joint second, both recording 13.52 burglaries per 1,000 households.

Heath Alexander-Bew, personal lines director at Alan Boswell Group, commented: "It's promising to see that the majority of the local authorities in this list have observed a decrease in residential burglaries.

"However, it is clear that London and Yorkshire are hotspots for this crime, accounting for 10 of the 12 local authorities in the top 10 ranking.

"There are plenty of ways to improve your home security, especially when the Easter and summer holidays are approaching, and properties may be more vacant.

"Investing in a good quality security camera is a great start, as well as not letting mail and deliveries pile up, as this is an obvious tell-tale sign that you are away, and avoiding obvious spots for key safes, like by the front door."
