The rainbow flag is flying above Richmond today to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
The Council said the move is designed to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.
May 17 was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organisation's decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
The theme for 2022 is 'Our bodies, Our rights, Our choice'.
Council leader, Gareth Roberts, said: "The Council is committed to making Richmond upon Thames a fairer and safer place for all. Violence and discrimination against anyone based on their sexuality or gender identity is a hate crime.
"We work year-round with our partners, residents and communities to raise awareness and put a stop to hate crimes experienced by LGBTI communities.
"But today is a day when we encourage everyone to reflect on how they are supporting our LGBTI communities and the role they can play in making our borough diverse, inclusive and safe for those who live, work and visit here."
