Richmond's flagship Council gym and pools complex is under fire amid claims of poor and dirty facilities.

A petition has been launched by residents who are unhappy at the state of the Pools on the Park complex, which was built in the 1960s and is a Grade II listed building.

The petition highlights a series of issues that are said to be driving people away.

It states: "As members of the local community, we are concerned about the state of the gym facilities at Pools in the Park in Richmond upon Thames.

"Firstly, we have noticed that many of the gym machines are outdated and not properly maintained. This can lead to safety concerns for users and may discourage people from using them altogether.

"Secondly, we have observed that there is often a lack of staff available to assist with equipment use or answer questions. This can be frustrating for members who require assistance or guidance on how to use certain machines safely and effectively.

"Thirdly, we have noticed that cleanliness standards could be improved. Especially in the case of the sauna & pools."

The petition suggests that the lack of hygiene is a health risk, adding: "There have been incidents of people conducting infections from the use of the pools. Proper cleaning protocols must be put in place to ensure member safety and prevent the spread of germs."

The petition also complains that the sauna, steam and jacuzzi facilities are never available despite the fact that monthly prices have gone up and the facilities are been advertised upon signing up."

The petition group adds: "We believe these issues can be addressed through increased investment in new equipment, hiring additional staff members, and implementing stricter cleaning protocols.

"We urge Pools in the Park management to take action on these concerns as soon as possible so that our local community can enjoy safe and effective workout facilities."

The complex at Old Deer Park was completed in 1966 and it was recognised by Historic England as illustrating 'the more ambitious use of glazed curtain'. It received a Civic Trust award in 1967.

Richmond Council told Nub News it is looking at investing in the borough's leisure facilities.

A spokesperson said: "The Council is currently working on a leisure strategy, which will set out the plans for the future of leisure services in the borough, including investment in improvements to existing facilities.

"Nearly 1,300 residents took part in a consultation and have given valuable feedback on the current provisions, including our leisure centres, as well as their needs for the future.

"These insights are being fed into the draft strategy which is expected to be discussed by the Council's Environment, Sustainability, Culture and Sports committee later this year."
