Sex crimes have risen by more than a quarter in South West London.
The increase led the police to taking a more proactive position last weekend with officers on patrol in large open spaces.
Between July 6 and August 2, there was a 27% rise in the number of sexual offences across the boroughs of Richmond, Merton, Wandsworth and Kingston.
During this period, 79 sexual offences were recorded, which is an extra 17 crimes compared to the previous month.
Superintendent Owain Richards, head of safeguarding on the South West borough command unit, said: "We have seen an increase in people meeting and drinking in open spaces such as parks, by the river and in green spaces.
"Whilst for many these are enjoyable places to be, for some, these places have been the scenes of recent sexual offences.

Over the past 12 months, there has been a 5% reduction in sexual offences across South West London and a 7% reduction across the capital. The Met said it has improved its sanction detection rate by 3% leading to more suspects being charged with sexual offences. "Whilst we have seen these improvements, and the South West BCU remains a safe place to live and work, nobody should experience the trauma of sexual offences," Mr Richards said. "We are therefore encouraging people to stay alert whilst enjoying the sunshine this weekend. "Please look out for your friends and take care of one another. Let people know where you are and, keep your drink near you and in sight to avoid it being spiked. If you or somebody else is in danger, call 999." The Met added: "If you are a victim of rape or sexual assault, please report it. "Even if you're not 100% sure, we'd sooner hear from you so that we can make sure you're safe. "If you're not ready to talk to the police just yet, that's OK. You can find a range of places to get support, advice and medical help by clicking here."
