A world renowned photographer, who has captured the likes of The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Kate Bush, is having an exhibition in Richmond.

NoonPowell Fine Art will present 'Lost in Rust', a solo exhibition by Gered Mankowitz until 8 November.

Lost in Rust brings together seventeen medium and large-scale images exploring Mankowitz's longstanding fascination with the unexpected colours and surfaces created by nature and time.

Developed over a number of years, the works move beyond the celebrated portraiture and music photography for which he is known around the world to reveal a deeply personal aspect of his creative practice.

Mankowitz's interest in texture and form has been present throughout his photographic career — from the character of an elderly person's hands to peeling movie posters and bubbling paint on an old garage door.

Rust, however, has always held a particular fascination.

The photographer said: "Rust has always held a special magic.

"The colouration and slow decay have intrigued me since I found a discarded padlock in the garden of my father's studio […] many years ago."

As Mankowitz's commercial career evolved, increasing interest in his extensive photographic archive became a full-time occupation, leaving little opportunity to pursue personal projects.

It was only later, when he was able to devote sustained time and attention to the collection that had been quietly developing alongside his professional career, that Lost in Rust began to take shape as a distinct body of work.

The first object Mankowitz worked with was the original padlock.

Weathering, oxidation and nature's own processes of decay had already transformed its surface.

Mankowitz's technique allowed him to capture minute detail and present the resulting image at monumental scale.

Removed from its familiar context, the utilitarian object became a painterly study, revealing unexpected topographies of colour and texture.

The photographer added: "The first piece I recorded was the original padlock and I developed a technique that would allow me to enlarge it to huge proportions — it worked beautifully, simple and uncomplicated, it allowed the inherent beauty of the subject to be revealed, and I became Lost in Rust."

Rachael Noon-Powell, Gallery Director, said: "Gered is known internationally for photographs that have become part of our cultural history, but what I find particularly compelling about Lost in Rust is that the same instinct for looking closely and recognising character is present in these works.

"He finds significance and beauty in objects that others might simply pass by, using imagery and scale to reveal something completely unexpected.

"We are proud to present this striking and unique body of work at NoonPowell."

The exhibition runs until 8 November at NoonPowell Fine Art, 20 Red Lion Street, TW9 1RW.
