Yesterday (7 November), during the King's Speech, a bill that will crackdown on rogue pedicab operators was announced.

The government's Pedicabs (London) Bill will give TFL the power to implement a licensing regime.

TFL will also be able to control fares, ensure drivers undergo criminal record checks, and set safety standards.

This follows growing concerns about unsafe pedicabs and passengers being ripped off.

Whilst the focus has been placed on cracking down on rogue operators in Westminster, Sarah Olney, MP for Richmond Park has fought a long campaign to get licenced rickshaw operators into her community, particularly on the weight-restricted Hammersmith Bridge.

Hammersmith Bridge's main carriageway has been closed to vehicle traffic since 2019, however, once the initial stabilisation works are completed in early 2024, cycle traffic should be able to cross unrestricted.

This could allow a pedicab service to be put in place across the bridge while decisions are made regarding the next phase of the works.

Furthermore, the addition of pedicabs could help relieve some of the major traffic issues that have been plaguing south west London, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional taxis.

Olney commented on the announcement: "Hammersmith Bridge has become nearly impassable for elderly and less mobile people in my community.

"A pedicab service across the river would be a game changer.

"While the Government denies responsibility for the full Bridge repairs, TfL can at the very least start getting people moving across it. After 4 years of closures and delays, we need to get this vital link at least partially open."

She added: "Anyone who lives in southwest London has seen a massive rise in traffic in the last few years.

"If they're properly licensed, pedicabs could help get people out of taxis and cars, relieve pressure on the road network, and make our communities just that little bit greener.

"The bill is extremely welcome. Pedicabs could be an excellent addition to London's streets, connecting communities for the first time in years and helping keep our city's air clean."
