More than 90% of this year's planned road resurfacing works in Richmond upon Thames have already been completed, according to the Council.

Richmond Council says 91% of its highway resurfacing programme for the current financial year is finished, alongside 81% of planned footpath renewals.

The works form part of a record £21 million, three-year highways investment package launched in March last year, aimed at upgrading roads and pavements across the borough to improve infrastructure and safety.

Richmond borough has also received national recognition for its highways strategy.

The Department for Transport has awarded the borough a green rating for its maintenance and improvement plans. As a result, the council will receive an additional £1.2 million in funding for the next financial year, which will be invested into further road and pavement upgrades.

So far, more than 123,000 square metres of road have been resurfaced across the borough, from Kew to Hampton.

The Council says works are being delivered on a priority basis, with a different road currently being upgraded each day.

Alongside resurfacing, footpath reconstruction and improvements to street lighting are also taking place to support safer walking routes.

Councillor Alexander Ehmann, Chair of the Transport and Air Quality Committee, said: "We are making real visible changes to the roads and pavements that keep our borough moving, making daily journeys more enjoyable and safer for everyone."

The Council says twice as many roads have been resurfaced this year compared to last year, including the repair of more than 500 potholes.

Weather permitting, by the end of March more than 140,000 square metres of road across Richmond are expected to have been upgraded.

Cllr Ehmann added: "Already this year we have delivered an unprecedented number of upgrades with more to be completed in the coming months and beyond.

"Our teams are working efficiently to prioritise the highways most in need, but rest assured every road resurfaced is one closer to a road near you."
