Final fundraising bid to keep the Great River Race afloat

A new and final push to raise the funds needed to keep the one of Richmond's most spectacular annual river events going has been launched.

The Great River Race was cancelled earlier this year for the first time in 33 years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As we reported last month, the entire event is at risk, due to a crisis which has seen many of its main sources of funds disappear. The next race has been scheduled for September 2021.

Organisers are aiming to raise £35,000 via an online Crowdfunder campaign and there are three days left to make donations.

So far, £20,000 has been raised from donations by 548 supporters - they are 58% of the way there.

The organisers said: "This really is the last time that we will be reaching out for your support for our GRR Crowdfunding Campaign.

"Donations can still be made until this Friday, October 2, .

"Please help us NOW to keep going so that we can bring you the GRR this time next year."

They added: "To those who have already donated THANK YOU SO MUCH for your generosity and support.

"Many people have said that if everyone can give just a little we can do this so please help us to make that come true!"

About the popular race

Known affectionately as the 'river marathon', the 21.6-mile race on the River Thames begins on the Isle of Dogs and finishes near Ham House.

It involves 2,500 people in 300 boats battling it out for the glory of being crowned UK Traditional Boat Champions.

Huge crowds gather on the riverside as entrants pass under Richmond Bridge on the final stretch of the race.
