New art exhibition celebrates nature and biodiversity on Ham Lands

A new art exhibition exploring the ecology of plants and trees on Ham Lands nature reserve is taking place this summer.
Taking place at Ham Library, 'Drawing on Ham Lands' will contain a large charcoal drawing by Nicky Rolls, botanical sketch books and illustrations by Lucy T Smith and a stone carving by Amanda Randall between Friday, 13 June to Wednesday, 9 July 2025.
Copies of the hand drawn map, created by Smith, will be distributed free at the venue to guide visitors to the nature reserve.
There, visitors can use the map to discover the "fascinating and iconic" species which inspired the artworks.
The three female artist say that although they have very different practices and come from various parts of the UK, they are united by their common concern for the protection of biodiversity in the face of the climate and nature crisis.

Ham Lands local nature reserve is where they meet to draw, exchange ideas and celebrate the resilience of nature.
There will be an evening talk and celebration on at 6:30pm on Monday 16, June.
Here the artists will explain their approach to the theme 'Interdependence' and a colleague from Friends of Ham Lands will explain the conservation work carried out by volunteers.
Visitors can contribute to a co–created artwork 'The Spreading Oak Tree,' chat with the artists informally, sign up for the volunteers and view Smith's sketch books out of the glass case.
The exhibition, supported by the Richmond Arts and Ideas festival, will also offer complementary refreshments on the day.
