A man died in the River Thames last week.

It happened off the towpath which connects Richmond and Kingston, about halfway between Teddington Lock and Kingston.

Police set up a cordon on Lower Ham Road and the stretch of path was closed in both directions as emergency services attended the scene.

A police spokesman confirmed the tragic news: "Police were called to Lower Ham Road in Kingston on Thursday, February 18 at approximately 11:00hrs to reports of a body of a man in the River Thames.

"Police Marine Units attended along with RNLI and London Ambulance Service. A man was recovered from the river. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Next of kin have been informed.

"At this time, the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious."
