A local bookshop is hosting an event to celebrate the career of David Bowie.

Books on the Rise, who are based in Richmond, are hosting David Bowie: The Artist, The Albums, The Music to commemorate the release of a book of the same name.

The show will feature special guests Sefi Carmel, a composer who worked with Bowie, and experienced radio DJ Mark Dezzani.

For Cheryl Robson, proprietor of the award-winning bookshop alongside her husband Stephen, the event is something of a passion project – having been a fan of Bowie for several decades.

She said: "We're very excited.

"I went to a concert of Bowie's when he was in his Ziggy Stardust phase, that was one of the first concerts I went to and it was incredible.

"I've been a fan ever since."

So far as the book is concerned, meanwhile, Robson claimed it is a translation of a biography written by French-language author Phillippe Margotin – who the couple know from a previous project.

It explores Bowie's entire working life in depth, from the songs to the personas, and features many colleagues and musicians who worked with him.

With the 10th anniversary of the music legend's death upon us, they felt the endeavour was a worthy way to mark such a milestone.

Robson also claimed Bowie holds particular importance for the LGBTQ community, given his androgynous personality and openness around being bisexual.

However, she stated the modern music scene makes it more difficult for such trailblazers to break through today.

She said: "It's very hard today for an up-and-coming artist to have the same reach and impact.

"I don't think record companies are putting as much money into young artists.

"It's all to do with Spotify and the way money is collected for views.

"The (current) setup makes it very hard for young artists to break through."
