Kew Gardens unveils handcrafted homewares made from felled arboretum trees

A new range of handcrafted homewares made from timber felled in Kew Gardens' arboretum has been unveiled today (Monday 4 August).
The collection, created in partnership with traditional woodworkers Selwyn House and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, transforms waste wood from trees removed due to storm damage, disease, or essential management into 'beautiful and meaningful' household items.
It gives Richmond and wider London residents to take home a genuine piece of Kew's botanical legacy.
Each item in the limited-edition range, which includes cake knives, butter knives and pinch bowls is made from trees that once formed part of the 11,000-strong collection in Kew's arboretum.
Species such as Butternut, Hackberry and Box have been expertly crafted into unique pieces that celebrate craftsmanship, conservation, and sustainability.
Every item is hallmarked with a unique code that allows customers to trace its origin through Kew's new Grown at Kew platform.
This feature reveals where the tree once stood, its species, history and the reason for its removal, all part of a commitment to full traceability and environmental stewardship.

Speaking about the collaboration, Rachel Wicking, Gift Buyer at RBG Kew, said: "We're so excited to introduce this extraordinary range which is a celebration of craftsmanship and conservation.
"Each unique piece is not only beautifully handcrafted but also deeply meaningful, offering a rare opportunity to take home a piece of Kew's history, crafted sustainably from trees that have stood in Kew's landscape for decades or even centuries."
Sean Best, Co-founder of Selwyn House, added: "We feel incredibly privileged, not only to work so closely with the team at the world-renowned Kew Gardens, but also for the opportunity to work with unusual varieties of timber, from trees of such significance and provenance.
"We hope to bring new life to the trees which have had to be felled, making items which can be used and enjoyed in customers' homes for many more years."
Items include:
- Kew Butternut Cake Knife – £30
- Kew Butternut Butter Knife – £20
- Kew Hackberry Pinch Bowls – £24
In the coming months, the range will be expanded to include candlesticks, chopping boards and bowls.
The Kew x Selwyn House collection is available now in-store at Kew Gardens and online via shop.kew.org.
