A team of pupils from Orleans Park has made it to the shortlist of a nationwide product innovation competition led by the Design Museum.

The youngsters designed and developed the ingenious 'Sturdy Stabiliser', which is a set of portable and reusable pads to fix wobbly chairs and tables legs.

They pitched the product in a high pressure Dragons' Den style event alongside nine other schools to win support for it to go into production and be sold in the museum's shop.

The Design Ventura competition is supported by Deutsche Bank and the pitching event took place at the organisation's offices in front of a panel of expert judges.

Some 390 schools and 20,000 students took part in this year's competition.

Teacher, Mark Treharne, said: "Our Year 9 DT lessons were fun with teams competing to represent Orleans Park before we

voted for the top team and submitted their idea to the competition.

"We were very proud to find that our Sturdy Stabiliser team was selected as one of the top ten teams in the country.

"Our team performed admirably amongst the other high quality presentations on show and they received specific feedback from one of the judges."

Judge, Sebastian Conran, a designer and trustee at the museum, told the team: "Your product is simple and ingenious and I wish I'd thought of it!

" It was presented cleverly and wittily by your great team who should be on TV!"

Mr Treharne said the team – Jared, aged 14, Joe, aged 13 and Martin, aged 13 – had been 'great ambassadors for Orleans Park'.

He congratulated them for their hard work and courage.

The shortlisted teams all designed products which responded to the brief to improve everyday life by addressing a social, educational or environmental issue and retails for around £15

The final winning design will be developed for manufacture and sale in the Design Museum Shop with all the profits going to a charity of the students' choice.

A celebration event will be held in April when the prize winners will be announced.

The Design Museum is the world's leading museum devoted to contemporary architecture and design. Its work encompasses all elements of design, including fashion, product and graphic design.

Now based in Kensington, it has showcased the work of some of the world's most celebrated designers and architects including Paul Smith, Zaha Hadid, Jonathan Ive, Frank Gehry, Eileen Gray and Dieter Rams.
