Historic royal home in Kew to undergo major overhaul
By Cesar Medina 4th Nov 2026
Fresh planning proposals have been approved outlining an extensive upgrade and refurbishment scheme for a historic Grade II listed building in Kew.
Prepared by Clews Architects, the plans detail a comprehensive overhaul aimed at modernising Cambridge Cottage's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure while safeguarding its rich royal heritage.
The proposals focus heavily on improving energy efficiency, sustainability, and replacing outdated utilities.
The key measures include:
- Plant Room Conversion: A remaining store room within the building is set to be converted into a dedicated mechanical and electrical services plant room.
- Green Energy Upgrades: Upgrading Cambridge Cottage's existing electrical supply to power new, energy-efficient air source heat pumps.
- Modernising Pipework: Replacing old domestic hot and cold water services, sanitary pipework, and toilet ventilation systems across both the ground and upper floors—effectively stripping out aged lead and mild steel pipework.
- Smart Building Management: Installing a new Trend Building Management System (BMS) in line with Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (RBGK) design standards to drastically improve environmental monitoring and energy performance.
Originally built as a private residence and notably housing Lord Bute as well as George III's sons, Prince Adolphus and Prince George, Cambridge Cottage was gifted to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1904, where it initially served as a forestry museum.
