Parishioners at St Anne's Kew gathered for a service to mark the passing of the Queen and concluded by singing the nation's new anthem.

Initially, the service – on Thursday evening - was planned to offer support to the Queen after it emerged during the day that her health had deteriorated.

As news was announced of the monarch's death, so the small gathering gave thanks for her dedication and service.

The service at the church, which is close to Kew Gardens, was led by vicar Giles Fraser, who is also a well known commentator in the media.

During an emotional address he pointed out that, sadly, we will never sing God Save the Queen again and highlighted how she had been a point of continuity for generations.

He said: "She has done the job so beautifully, so faithfully, so sacrificially. I don't know how we are going to get on without her really.

"She was alive for 30 per cent of US history…We have been much blessed to have her as our Queen."

He then asked the congregation to stand and sing the anthem, changing the words to reference the King – King Charles III.
