It's like being home in the Caribbean for one long-time Richmond resident.

This heatwave may be too much for some people, but not Simeon Telesford.

His fruity drinks shack along the riverside is basking in the hot weather and business is good.

He talked to Richmond Nub News about life in Richmond.

"Everybody knows me, I know everybody," Simeon said.

"I met a guy the other day. He said 'I met you when I was nine years old and I'm 40 now.

"That's a good energy.

"I used to run the rowing boats and then I graduated to doing passenger boats, and then onto doing my own thing."

He runs Fruit Village from one of the stalls on the riverside.

It offers concoctions such as carrot, apple and ginger; mango, papaya and pineapple; and beetroot, apple and ginger, as well as watermelon, coconut and a sugar cane bag.

Simeon is from Trinidad but has made Richmond his home after moving here decades ago.

He said he encounters racism if he travels into the centre of London, but not here.

Asked what it is about the town that made him stay, he replied: "It's what Richmond liked about me that kept me here!

"I'm talking back in the 80s and 90s, I knew everybody.

"I walk to London and a lady is holding her handbag tightly like I'm a thief, so I stay here [in Richmond].

"Richmond feels like the Caribbean for me, especially when there's some sun."
