Death in the Thames – details of rescue operation revealed

A 70-year-old man pulled from the Thames as the result of an emergency operation has died.

A team involving the RNLI Teddington lifeboat, a police helicopter, officers on the ground and the London Ambulance Service were involved.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called at 21:03hrs on Monday, April 11, to reports of a man in the Thames close to Richmond Bridge.

"Officers from the Met's Marine Support Unit attended. At the scene a 70-year-old man was recovered from the water. He was sadly pronounced dead at 23:12hrs.

"Next of kin has been notified."

The circumstances of how the man entered the water are not clear.

The police added: "The death is currently being treated as unexplained but is not thought to be suspicious."
