Dangers of Sawyers Hill highlighted as park reopens to cyclists

By The Editor 31st Jul 2020

Three cyclists were taken to hospital this month after coming off their bikes on Sawyers Hill in Richmond Park.

One of them suffered a fractured skull.

The accidents were highlighted by Royal Parks Police ahead of the park being reopened for cycling on weekends tomorrow (Saturday, August 1).

The force tweeted: "In July we have had at least three cyclists/ riders come off on Sawyers Hill in #Richmondpark.

"All taken to hospital in an ambulance, with one sustaining a fractured skull.

"Please take extra care on this section of road and slow down. The slope is deceiving."

Sawyers Hill is one of the main roads in the park.

A few hundreds yards after you enter from Richmond Gate, the road goes downhill and continues for a long stretch.

It is very easy to pick up speed on this section and can be tempting to go as fast as you can.

But, as the parks police show, it comes with considerable danger of injuring yourself or others.
