The Antipodea café restaurant in Radnor Gardens has been forced to temporarily close as the result of repeated break-ins.

The outlet, which is part of an Australian theme chain, has suffered vandalism and theft, while there are also fears for the safety of staff.

A spokesman for the chain said: "We have unfortunately had many break-ins over the past few months and are working with the Council and Police regarding ways in which we can work together to remedy the situation.

The outlet, which is part of an Australian theme chain, has suffered vandalism and theft, while there are also fears for the safety of staff.

"We are temporarily closed whilst we work through this."

The restaurant sits on a prime site overlooking the Thames at Cross Deep in Twickenham and is popular with local families using Radnor Gardens and its playground, however it has become a target for young thieves and vandals.

A notice in the window states: "Unfortunately, due to frequent break-ins we have to close to put further security in place and look after our staff. We hope to be back open as soon as possible."

The restaurant opened in the summer of 2021, serves all-day brunch and is a daytime version of the restaurant's Richmond and Kew venues.

As well as drinks, the cafe has a wide selection of pastries and breakfast and lunch dishes, including many with the ethically sourced cacklebean eggs .

Continuing the Australian theme, homemade lamingtons, TimTams, Vegemite, koala bears and Minties are all available to buy at the restaurant.

The restaurant has around 15 tables and provides full table service, as well as takeaway and delivery.

The gardens were created in 1903 by Twickenham Urban District Council from two riverside properties - Radnor House formed the central section of the gardens and the riverside garden of Cross Deep House formed the southern area.
