Jeremy Clarkson has given his personal endorsement to The Marlborough Pub, on Richmond Hill, which has triggered a wave appreciation.

The TV star, who has won plaudits for his Amazon Prime series featuring the struggles of becoming an amateur farmer in the Cotswolds, tweeted his joy over a meal there this week.

In a recommendation to his 7.5m followers, he wrote: "Just popped into the Marlborough pub in Richmond upon Thames and God almighty, the food was good. Top boozer."

The former Top Gear presenter is famously fond of his food and the tweet attracted around 15,000 likes and 300 comments.

The BT Sport football presenter and former Richmond resident, Jake Humphrey, added his praise, tweeting: "My old local. Drunk Sunday lunches are a happy, distant, pre-children memory."

Staff at the popular pub appeared delighted with the pat on the back and tweeted: "It was a pleasure to have you dine with us! Chef Smiley is over the moon you enjoyed the food. If you thought today was good, you should check out his Sunday roasts!"

A Clarkson follower in Australia, Brian Spour, wrote: "The Marlborough was my local back some 10 years before I moved to Sydney, Australia...You're damn right it was the best back then/now and boy do you make me want to move back to Richmond Hill...feeling homesick!"

The Marlborough, which is owned by Young's, is famed for its Sunday roasts and pub garden.

Its website boasts: "Our talented kitchen team are passionate about using fresh British seasonal ingredients to create amazing mouth-watering dishes.

"Our talented Head Chef carefully curates his menus each week using only the very finest of British produce and seasonal ingredients. With our resident classics such as our juicy, chin dribbling burgers and the nation's favourite Fish and Chips as well as our stand out, sensational seasonal dishes, we have something for everyone."

Its Sunday Roasts, which are all served with Yorkshire pudding, gravy, roasted potatoes, parsnips, carrots, braised red cabbage and sautéed greens, include Striploin of beef at £18, Half roast chicken, lemon, garlic and herb marinade at £17, and Pork belly with apple sauce at £17.
